Checkers (also called draughts) is a two-player strategy board game played on an 8×8 board using only the dark squares. Each player starts with 12 pieces placed on the three nearest dark rows. Pieces move diagonally forward one square and capture by jumping over an adjacent opponent piece into the empty square beyond; multiple jumps in one turn are allowed when available. When a piece reaches the farthest row, it is “kinged” and gains the ability to move and capture diagonally both forward and backward. The usual goal is to capture all opposing pieces or leave the opponent with no legal moves. Many rule sets require you to take a capture if one is available; small regional variations exist.
