One of the most remarkable Russian athletes in recent history is Maria Sharapova, a former professional tennis player. Born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russia, Sharapova began playing tennis at a young age and quickly showed immense promise. Her family moved to the United States when she was just seven years old so she could receive better training.

Sharapova's rise in the world of tennis was meteoric. She turned professional in 2001, and by 2004, she had already made her mark by winning Wimbledon at the age of 17. This victory made her the third-youngest woman to ever win the Wimbledon singles title. Her powerful baseline play, coupled with an aggressive and precise serving game, made her a formidable opponent on the court.

Her career is highlighted by a total of five Grand Slam titles. Besides her Wimbledon win, she claimed the US Open in 2006, the Australian Open in 2008, and the French Open in 2012 and 2014. These victories are a testament to her versatility and ability to adapt to different playing surfaces.

Sharapova also achieved the coveted career Grand Slam, winning all four major titles, a rare feat in tennis. She became the tenth woman to achieve this in the history of the sport. Her success extended beyond the Grand Slams; she won 36 titles in total on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour over the course of her career.

In addition to her on-court successes, Sharapova was known for her off-court business ventures and endorsements, making her one of the highest-paid athletes in the world for several years. Her brand endorsements included major companies like Nike, Porsche, and Tag Heuer.

However, Sharapova's career faced a significant setback in 2016 when she received a two-year suspension for using a banned substance, meldonium. This substance had been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list at the beginning of that year. Sharapova claimed she had been taking it for health reasons for ten years and did not realize it had been banned. Her suspension was later reduced to 15 months after an appeal.

After returning to the sport in 2017, Sharapova struggled to regain her previous form and faced several injuries. She announced her retirement from professional tennis in February 2020. Her career is remembered not only for her remarkable achievements and intense competitiveness on the court but also for the controversy and resilience she showed in the face of challenges.
