Rapunzel is a famous fairy tale character from the Brothers Grimm’s collection of stories. The story begins with a couple who long for a child. The wife becomes pregnant, and during her pregnancy, she sees a beautiful garden next to their house, owned by a witch. The wife, craving some of the rapunzel (a type of salad green) from the garden, asks her husband to bring it to her. He sneaks into the garden, but the witch catches him. In exchange for the rapunzel, she demands their unborn child. The husband, desperate, agrees.

When the child, a girl, is born, the witch comes to claim her. She names the baby Rapunzel and locks her away in a high tower, with no stairs or door, only a window. Rapunzel grows up to be a beautiful young woman, with long, golden hair. One day, a prince passing by hears Rapunzel singing and is enchanted by her voice. He finds out how to reach her, and they begin meeting secretly. Eventually, Rapunzel becomes pregnant. When the witch finds out, she punishes Rapunzel and banishes her to a desolate place. The prince, who had been blinded by the witch during his escape, searches for Rapunzel. After a long time, they reunite, and Rapunzel’s tears restore his sight. They live happily ever after.

The story of Rapunzel is often interpreted as a tale about the power of love, freedom, and the eventual triumph of good over evil.
