As midnight approaches, we write one hope on small slips of paper and fold them into an old wooden box. Outside, the street becomes a glowing river of fireworks and neighbors call greetings across balconies. We step onto the cold balcony with steaming mugs and count down together, voices overlapping like music. When the clock strikes twelve, we light sparklers and promise to be kinder, braver, and more curious in the year ahead. The city hums with possibilities and even the tired faces on late buses look a little brighter. In the morning, snow has dusted the streets and children leave tiny footprints on the white roofs of the parked cars. That quiet newness reminds me that every year is a chance to begin again, and I tuck the wooden box under my pillow until next December.
