Great Britain is an island with a surprising variety of landscapes, from towering peaks to long rivers and vast lakes.

The highest mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland, rising to 1,345 metres. It attracts thousands of hikers every year, though the summit is often hidden in clouds. The tallest peak in Wales is Snowdon, and in England it is Scafell Pike.

The longest river is the River Severn, which flows for 354 kilometres from the Welsh mountains to the Bristol Channel. It has a large tidal range, creating the famous Severn Bore.

The largest lake by surface area is Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland. In Scotland, Loch Lomond is the largest by volume and a popular beauty spot.

The most northerly point of mainland Britain is Dunnet Head, not John o’ Groats as many think. The most southerly is Lizard Point in Cornwall.

These extremes show how much natural diversity fits into a relatively small island.
