Children in Egypt in the 19th Century

In the 19th century, the life of children in Egypt was not easy. Many children lived in villages near the Nile River. They helped their parents at home, in the fields, or with animals. Boys often worked with their fathers, and girls helped their mothers with cooking, cleaning, and looking after younger children.

Not all children went to school. Education was mostly for boys from richer families. They could learn reading, writing, religion, and mathematics. Poor children usually started working at an early age, because their families needed help.

Children in Egypt also played simple games. They could play outside, swim in the Nile, or make toys from wood, clay, or cloth. Their lives were very different from the lives of many children today, but family, work, and tradition were very important for them.
