Jess was lying on the beach when she heard someone calling for help. She ran to the sea and saw a small girl underwater just two meters from the shore. She was drowning when Jess took her out of water and brought her to her parents. They were having a picnic near the car and did not know the girl wasn’t there. Jess told them to be more attentive to their children.
Why: Past Continuous is used for a longer action in progress, for example was lying, was drowning, were having. Past Simple is used for short completed actions, for example heard, ran, saw, took, brought, told.
