Which past simple questions need the word did?

Past Simple questions need did when the main verb is an ordinary action verb.

Use this order: Did + subject + verb in the base form?

• Did you play football yesterday?
• Did she visit her grandma?
• Where did they go?

Do not use did with was or were: Was he at school? Also, when who or what is the subject, we usually do not use did: Who called you?
