Write about the early Vedic period.

The early Vedic period was an important stage in ancient Indian history. It lasted roughly from about 1500 BCE to 1000 BCE. The main source of information about this time is the Rigveda, a collection of sacred hymns.

People of this period were mainly pastoral, which means they kept cattle and moved from place to place in search of good pastures. Cattle were a sign of wealth. Agriculture also existed, but it was not yet as important as it became later.

Society was organized into tribes. The chief was called a rajan, but his power was limited by tribal assemblies. Families were usually patriarchal, meaning the father was the head of the family.

Religion was based on the worship of natural forces. Important gods included Indra, the god of war and storms; Agni, the god of fire; and Varuna, connected with order and truth. People performed sacrifices and recited hymns to please the gods.

In this period, the varna system was only beginning to form. Social divisions existed, but they were not as strict as in the later Vedic period.
