I would like to talk about a traditional Russian wedding ceremony. Although modern weddings can be very different, many families still follow old customs.

One popular custom is for the groom to “buy” the bride before the ceremony. Her friends and relatives ask him funny questions or give him small tasks. He has to bring sweets, flowers, or money as a symbolic payment. Another tradition is that the parents of the couple greet them with bread and salt after the wedding ceremony. The newly married couple takes a piece of bread, dips it in salt, and eats it. People believe that the person who takes the bigger piece will be the head of the family. Guests also shout “Gorko!”, which means “bitter”. Then the bride and groom have to kiss to make the drink or food “sweet”.

Different family members have important roles. The parents usually help organize the wedding, welcome guests, and give advice to the young couple. The bride’s friends help her get ready and take part in the playful “buying the bride” tradition. The groom’s friends support him and help him complete the tasks. Grandparents and older relatives often give blessings and tell stories about family traditions. Guests congratulate the couple, bring presents, dance, and take part in games.

I have taken part in a traditional wedding ceremony as a guest. I really enjoyed it because it was cheerful, emotional, and full of interesting customs. I especially liked the music, dancing, and the moment when the family welcomed the newly married couple with bread and salt. It was a very warm celebration because everyone felt like part of one big family.
