1) What images spring to mind when you hear the word ‘robot’?
2) Will robots take over the world one day?
3) The West sees robots as menacing, Japan sees them as helpful – how about you?
4) Which movie robot is your favourite?
5) What would you like your robot to do?
6) What role will robots play in our society later this century?
7) Will robots ever look identical to humans?

When I hear the word “robot”, I imagine a smart machine made of metal and plastic. It may have a screen, cameras instead of eyes, and special arms for doing different jobs. I also think of robots in factories, hospitals, space stations and films.

I do not think robots will take over the world one day. Robots can do many tasks, but people create their programmes and decide how to use them. However, people should use robots responsibly and make rules for their safe work.

I see robots as helpful rather than menacing. They can do dangerous, boring or very difficult work. For example, robots can help doctors during operations, explore other planets and work in places where it is unsafe for people.

My favourite movie robot is WALL-E. He is small, curious and kind. Although he is a machine, he shows emotions and cares about the planet and other characters.

I would like my robot to help me with everyday tasks: clean my room, remind me about important things and explain difficult school topics. It would also be useful if it could help elderly people at home.

Later this century, robots will probably become common in medicine, transport, education, industry and space exploration. They may help people work faster and more accurately, but they will not completely replace human creativity, responsibility and communication.

Robots may look very similar to humans in the future. They could have realistic faces, voices and movements. Still, a robot will be different from a person because it does not have real feelings, life experience or its own moral responsibility.
