Описание Спасской Башни на английском языке

The Spasskaya Tower is the ceremonial main gate of the Moscow Kremlin, rising above Red Square on the fortress’s eastern wall. Built in 1491 during the reign of Ivan III, it was designed by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari and combines the brick power of late-medieval fortifications with the delicate white-stone ornament typical of Moscow architecture. Its name comes from sacred images of the Savior (“Spas”) once placed above the gateway, and for centuries passing through this arch was treated as a solemn act: processions of tsars and patriarchs entered here, and ordinary travelers would dismount and remove their hats.
What most people recognize today are the great Kremlin chimes set high on the tower and the glowing ruby star that crowns its tented roof. The clock, added and refined in the 17th century, rings the quarter hours and has long marked national moments—most famously the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. Architecturally, the tower is a vertical cascade of tiers: a square base with a through-gate, traceried lancet openings and kokoshnik gables above, then a soaring octagonal drum that leads into the spire. Once guarded by a drawbridge over the Kremlin moat, it now stands as an emblem of Moscow itself—at once defensive wall, sacred gate, civic clock, and one of the city’s most photographed silhouettes.
