My Dream Journey: Around Iceland on the Ring Road

I’ve always dreamed of a journey where the road is as exciting as the destination, and for me that road is Iceland’s Ring Road. I imagine landing in Reykjavik, picking up a small car, and setting off clockwise with a playlist of calm songs and a thermos of hot tea. The air would smell like the sea and rain, and the sky would feel bigger than any sky I’ve seen before.

On the south coast I would stop every few kilometers: at roaring waterfalls that throw mist into the air, at black-sand beaches where the Atlantic crashes like drums, and near fields of moss-covered lava that look like a different planet. I would walk along the edge of a glacier lagoon, watching blue ice move silently, and take a simple picnic facing mountains that keep their snow even in summer.

The best part of the trip would be the quiet moments. I’d sit in a small hot spring while steam curls into the cold wind, then try fresh rye bread baked using natural geothermal heat. In small towns I’d chat with people in cafés, learn a few phrases in Icelandic, and hear stories about long winters and bright summers. If the sky is kind, I’d stay up late to see the northern lights, green rivers of light flowing over a dark horizon.

This journey attracts me because it combines freedom and respect: freedom to stop whenever the view steals my breath, and respect for wild nature that asks you to move slowly and leave no trace. I believe I would return home with a camera full of wide horizons and a mind that feels wider too—calmer, more patient, and more curious about the world.
