A snake is a long, legless reptile that belongs to the order Squamata, suborder Serpentes. Snakes are known for their elongated, cylindrical bodies, smooth or keeled scales, and the absence of limbs. Their skin is usually covered in scales, which help them to move and shed their old skin periodically as they grow. Most snakes have a flexible jaw structure, allowing them to swallow prey much larger than their head.

Snakes are carnivorous and hunt a wide variety of prey, including small mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, and even other reptiles. They catch their food through constriction or venom, depending on the species. Some species, like cobras and vipers, possess venomous fangs, which they use to inject venom into their prey, paralyzing or killing it.

They are found in many different habitats, from deserts and forests to grasslands and oceans. Snakes are cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature depends on the external environment. While some snakes are non-venomous and pose no danger to humans, others can be highly toxic and should be handled with care.

Snakes use different methods of locomotion, including slithering, sidewinding, and even swimming. Many species are solitary creatures, coming together only for mating. Despite their fearsome reputation, snakes play an important role in ecosystems by controlling the populations of rodents and other small animals.
