Alexander Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright, and novelist of the Romantic era, widely regarded as the founder of modern Russian literature. Born on June 6, 1799, in Moscow, Pushkin came from a noble family, and his African heritage through his great-grandfather Abram Gannibal, who was brought to Russia as a slave and later became a military engineer and a nobleman, played a notable role in his identity and legacy. Pushkin's early exposure to literature and the Russian language inspired his passion for poetry, which he began writing at a young age.

Educated at the Imperial Lyceum in Tsarskoye Selo, Pushkin quickly gained a reputation for his poetic talent, publishing his first major works in the early 1820s. His early works, like Ruslan and Lyudmila, a long poem filled with humor and folklore, attracted widespread attention. However, his outspoken political views and satirical verses criticizing the Russian aristocracy led to government scrutiny, and he was exiled to southern Russia in 1820.

During his exile, Pushkin continued to write and developed his distinctive style, blending Romanticism with Russian themes and folklore. Some of his most important works, such as The Prisoner of the Caucasus, The Robber Brothers, and The Fountain of Bakhchisaray, were composed during this period, showcasing his deepening interest in Russian culture and history.

Pushkin returned from exile and reached the peak of his literary career with works that are now considered masterpieces of Russian literature. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, is one of his most famous works, depicting Russian society and the life of a disenchanted nobleman. Pushkin also wrote historical dramas like Boris Godunov and numerous short stories, fairy tales, and poems that explored Russian life, nature, and the complexities of human emotions.

Despite his literary success, Pushkin faced continued scrutiny from the Russian government, and his life was marked by personal and financial troubles. In 1831, he married Natalia Goncharova, whose beauty attracted much attention and even led to rumors that ultimately caused friction between Pushkin and members of the Russian nobility. This tension culminated in a duel with Georges d'Anthès, a French officer, in January 1837. Pushkin was fatally wounded and died two days later, on January 29, 1837, at the age of 37.

Pushkin's contributions to Russian literature were immense, shaping the Russian literary language and influencing generations of writers. His works remain deeply beloved in Russia and around the world, celebrated for their lyricism, depth, and insight into Russian identity and human nature.
