The Rhinoceros

A rhinoceros is a large wild animal that lives mainly in Africa and Asia. It has a strong body, thick skin, short legs, and one or two horns on its nose. The word «rhinoceros» means «nose horn».

Rhinos usually eat plants. They feed on grass, leaves, branches, and fruit. Even though they look heavy and slow, they can run quite fast when they are in danger.

There are several kinds of rhinos, for example the white rhinoceros, the black rhinoceros, and the Indian rhinoceros. Rhinos have poor eyesight, but they have a good sense of smell and hearing.

Today many rhinos are endangered. People hunt them for their horns, and their natural habitats are becoming smaller. That is why rhinos need protection in national parks and nature reserves.
