The Bashkir Yurt

The Bashkir yurt is a traditional home of the Bashkir people. It was very useful for people who moved from one place to another with their horses and cattle. A yurt could be built quickly and taken down easily.

The yurt had a round shape. Its wooden frame was covered with felt, which helped to keep warmth inside in winter and protect people from heat in summer. In the centre of the yurt there was usually a place for fire. The smoke went out through an opening at the top.

Inside the Bashkir yurt everything had its own place. People kept household things, clothes, carpets and dishes there. The yurt was not only a house, but also a symbol of family, comfort and respect for traditions.

Today the Bashkir yurt reminds people of the history and culture of the Bashkir nation. It shows how wisely people used natural materials and adapted their life to nature.
