What sort of character is Mrs Squeers?

What do you think the boarding school is like?

Mrs Squeers is a cruel, selfish and unpleasant character. She does not care about the boys at the school. She treats them harshly, gives them little food and helps her husband keep strict control over them.

The boarding school seems terrible. It is not a place where children are cared for or properly taught. It is cold, dirty and frightening, and the boys are hungry, unhappy and often punished.

So Mrs Squeers and the school both show how unfair and cruel some schools for poor children could be in the story.
