Many people think that Big Ben is the name of the whole tower, but actually it is the nickname of the Great Bell inside the tower. The tower itself is officially called Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben is famous for its huge clock and its deep, powerful chimes. It is also one of the main symbols of London and the United Kingdom. Tourists from all over the world come to see it and take photos near it. The tower was completed in 1859, so it has a long and interesting history. It is about 96 metres tall, which makes it very impressive. The clock has four large faces, so people can see the time from different sides. Each clock face is about seven metres wide. The Great Bell inside the tower weighs more than thirteen tons. Big Ben has appeared in many films, postcards, books, and television programmes. It is especially beautiful at night, when the tower and the clock are lit up. I think Big Ben is a wonderful place to visit because it shows the history, beauty, and importance of London.
