The most important traditional festival in Kazakhstan is Nauryz, which celebrates spring, renewal, friendship, and the beginning of a new year according to an ancient tradition. During Nauryz, people visit relatives, wear national clothes, attend concerts, play traditional games, and prepare generous meals. The symbolic dish, Nauryz kozhe, usually contains seven ingredients representing prosperity, health, happiness, and abundance.
Food is an essential part of celebrations in Kazakhstan. Guests are normally welcomed with a rich dastarkhan, or festive table. Tea is served with baursak, sweets, dried fruit, nuts, kurt, and other snacks. Meat dishes, especially beshbarmak, are often prepared for important national and family celebrations.
