Past Simple используется для законченного действия в прошлом: went, broke, fell, rang, started.
Past Continuous используется для действия, которое происходило в определенный момент в прошлом или было в процессе, когда произошло другое действие: was sleeping, were driving, was swimming, was sunbathing, were watching, wasn’t sleeping, were waiting.
