Пояснення правил

1. Артикль a/an використовується перед злічуваними іменниками в однині, коли предмет згадується вперше або не є конкретно визначеним.

Приклади з вправи:

• a refrigerator — холодильник;

• a beautiful vase — красива ваза;

• an engineer — інженер;

• an office — офіс;

• a bus — автобус;

• a music shop — музичний магазин;

• a cassette — касета.

An ставимо перед голосним звуком, а a — перед приголосним.

2. Артикль the використовується, коли йдеться про конкретний або вже згаданий предмет.

Наприклад, у реченні № 4 спочатку говориться про flowers без артикля, а потім — про the flowers, оскільки квіти вже згадувалися.

У реченні № 9 спочатку вживається an office, а потім the office, оскільки йдеться про той самий офіс.

3. Нульовий артикль (—) використовується:

• Перед присвійними займенниками: my cup, your hat, his cup.

• Перед незлічуваними іменниками в загальному значенні: tea, coffee, music.

• Перед іменниками в множині, коли йдеться про невизначені предмети: books, pens, flowers.

• Перед назвами кольорів у таких конструкціях: It's red. It's white.

• Перед днями тижня: on Tuesday.

• У сталому виразі: go to work.

• Після питальних слів what і whose, коли вони стоять безпосередньо перед іменником: What colour? Whose pen? What books?

4. Окреме правило: у виразі in the morning завжди використовується артикль the.

Отже, головне правило цієї вправи: a/an — для невизначеного предмета в однині, the — для конкретного предмета, а — означає, що артикль не потрібний.
