Put the verbs in brackets into the past simple.

Hercules 1) ______ (live) in Greece. He 2) ______ (be) half man and half god. His father was Zeus, the king of all the gods, and his mother was a human. One of these tasks was to kill the Hydra, an evil monster with nine heads. However, he 6) ______ (can/not) do it by himself.
