The Cold War and Beyond

The Cold War was a long period of rivalry between the USA and the USSR after the Second World War. These countries did not fight each other directly, but they competed in politics, science, space exploration and military power. The world was divided into two opposing groups of countries.

One of the most dangerous moments was the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The leaders of the USA and the USSR understood that a nuclear war would be terrible for all people. Later, the two countries began to sign agreements to reduce nuclear weapons.

In the late 1980s the Cold War came to an end. The Berlin Wall fell, and the Soviet Union ceased to exist in 1991. After that, the world changed greatly. Today countries still have disagreements, but people should remember the lessons of the Cold War: peace, dialogue and cooperation are much better than conflict.
