My favourite games are the ones that either tell a strong story, give me satisfying moment-to-moment gameplay, or create those “one more match” situations where you keep playing without noticing the time. I’ll split them into a few categories, because my favourites change depending on what mood I’m in.

Story and immersion

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – I love how every quest feels like it matters, even the smaller side stories. The world is dense, the characters are memorable, and the choices feel meaningful without being gimmicky.

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 – It’s slow in the best way: the atmosphere, the attention to detail, and the character writing make it feel like you’re living inside a film. I also like just riding around, hunting, and taking in the world.

  • Mass Effect (especially 2 and 3) – The crew relationships, the universe, and the feeling of building a team over time make it one of my favourite series. It’s a mix of sci-fi adventure and character drama that really lands for me.

  • Disco Elysium – It’s basically an interactive novel, but the writing is so sharp and the role-playing is so flexible that it feels completely unique. I like how it rewards curiosity and different kinds of “builds,” even non-combat ones.

Gameplay-first favourites

  • Dark Souls / Elden Ring – I enjoy the challenge and the sense of progress. They’re tough, but the combat is fair, and learning a boss or an area feels genuinely rewarding. Elden Ring adds exploration that constantly surprises me.

  • Hades – It’s one of the few games where losing still feels fun. The combat is smooth, the runs are quick, and the story keeps unfolding in a way that makes you want to keep trying.

  • Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – The parry-focused combat is so satisfying once it clicks. It’s stressful, but in a very “locked in” kind of way.

Strategy and “just one more turn”

  • Civilization V / Civilization VI – These are classic comfort games for me. I like planning long-term, adapting to neighbours, and getting that slow build from nothing to a huge empire.

  • XCOM 2 – I love the tension of turn-based fights where every decision matters, plus the base management layer. It creates great stories of clutch wins and painful losses.

Multiplayer and competition

  • Counter-Strike – I like how pure it is: aim, positioning, teamwork, and economy. It’s endlessly replayable because improvement is always possible.

  • Rocket League – Simple idea, deep skill ceiling. It’s fun casually, but also rewarding if you learn mechanics and play as a team.

Relaxing / creative favourites

  • Minecraft – It’s a game I can return to anytime. Sometimes I want to explore, sometimes build, sometimes just mess around with friends. It fits whatever mood I’m in.

  • Stardew Valley – It’s calming and structured at the same time. I like the routine of farming, upgrading, and slowly improving everything.

If I had to pick a short “top tier” list that I keep coming back to, it would probably be The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring, Hades, XCOM 2, and Minecraft, because they cover the moods I’m most often in: story, challenge, strategy, and relaxation.
