Grey Whales, often called 'friendly whales', make the same amazing journey every year! From April to November the whales stay in the cold waters of the Arctic looking for food. Then, from December to April they go to the warmer waters of Mexico to have their babies! The Grey Whale travels more miles than any other mammal on earth. They don't need tickets, passports or suitcases and I'm sure they all have a whale of a time!

Grey whales are truly remarkable for their annual migration, which is one of the longest of any mammal on Earth. From April to November, they feed in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Arctic, where they eat small creatures like amphipods and other tiny crustaceans that live on the ocean floor. This period is crucial because it allows them to build up the energy reserves they will need for their long journey.

Then, starting in December, grey whales begin their southward migration to the warm, shallow lagoons of Mexico. These waters are ideal for giving birth because they are relatively safe from predators and the water temperature is comfortable for newborn calves. Mother whales nurse their calves there, helping them grow strong enough to survive the journey back north.

The entire migration can cover up to 12,000 miles round-trip, which is more than any other mammal travels in a year. Despite being such long distances, grey whales are highly social and often curious around humans, which is why they’re sometimes called "friendly whales." Their ability to navigate such vast distances without any modern tools is amazing, relying instead on memory, instinct, and perhaps even the stars and the Earth’s magnetic field.

So every year, these whales complete an incredible cycle of feeding, breeding, and teaching their young, showing both endurance and a fascinating connection to the oceans they travel through.
