The difference between "famous" and "popular"

Famous means that many people know a person, place, or thing. Popular means that many people like it or choose it. A famous actor may be known by everyone, but not everyone may like him. A popular song is liked and listened to by many people. So fame is about being known, and popularity is about being liked. Something can be both famous and popular, but these words do not mean exactly the same thing.
