For many years, Americans marked this day with parades, flags, and school events. Italian American communities especially celebrate it because Columbus was born in Italy. In some cities, people hold festivals with music, costumes, and traditional food. At school, students may learn about explorers, maps, and the Age of Discovery. Today the holiday is also discussed carefully because Columbus's arrival brought serious problems for Native peoples. Because of this, many places also celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day. This day honors the history, culture, and rights of Native Americans. I think Columbus Day is a useful holiday when we remember both exploration and the people who already lived in America.
