  1. Ron tried to teach Harry how to play wizard’s chess. In this game, the chess pieces are alive and obey the player’s commands.

  2. For Christmas, Harry received a fifty-pence coin from the Dursleys, a wooden flute from Hagrid, a green Weasley jumper and homemade fudge from Mrs Weasley, and an anonymous package. The package contained an Invisibility Cloak that had belonged to Harry’s father. Ron received a maroon Weasley jumper and homemade fudge from his mother.

  3. The Mirror of Erised is a magical mirror that shows a person’s deepest, strongest desire. Harry saw his parents and other members of his family, because he had never known them. Ron saw himself successful and admired: Head Boy, Quidditch captain, and holding important school trophies. Dumbledore said that people had “wasted away before it” because they became obsessed with the visions in the mirror. They stopped living their real lives and could not accept that the images were not necessarily real or possible.

  4. Nicholas Flamel was a famous alchemist and the only known maker of the Philosopher’s Stone. The stone could produce the Elixir of Life, which made a person live much longer, and it could also turn metal into gold. Harry, Ron, and Hermione wanted information about Flamel because they believed that the object hidden behind Fluffy was the Philosopher’s Stone and that someone, probably Snape, was trying to steal it.

  5. Hagrid was secretly looking after a baby dragon called Norbert, a Norwegian Ridgeback. He had won the dragon egg from a stranger in a pub.

  6. Draco, Neville, Hermione, and Harry were punished because they had been out of bed at night and were wandering around Hogwarts after curfew. They lost House points and had to serve detention in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. Their task was to help investigate the mysterious deaths of unicorns.

  7. In the forest, Harry saw a hooded figure drinking the blood of a dead unicorn. His scar hurt badly, and he understood that the figure was connected with Voldemort. The centaur Firenze saved Harry and carried him away. Firenze explained that unicorn blood can keep someone alive even when they are close to death, but it gives the drinker a cursed life because they have killed something innocent and pure.

  8. They made Fluffy fall asleep by playing music. Harry played Hagrid’s wooden flute, because Hagrid had accidentally told them that Fluffy liked music. After they went through the trap door, they faced several protections: Devil’s Snare, flying keys, a giant wizard-chess game, a troll, and a potion puzzle. Hermione used fire to defeat Devil’s Snare, Harry caught the right flying key on a broomstick, Ron played wizard chess, and Hermione solved the potion riddle.

  9. Ron helped Harry and Hermione by acting as the chess player and telling them which moves to make. He understood that one of them had to be sacrificed so that Harry could checkmate the white king. Ron deliberately allowed the white queen to knock him unconscious, so Harry could continue toward the Philosopher’s Stone.

  10. Professor Quirrell revealed that he had been working for Voldemort. He admitted that he had tried to kill Harry during the Quidditch match and that he had let the troll into Hogwarts. He also revealed that Voldemort was living with him, attached to the back of his head under his turban. Snape had actually been trying to protect Harry from Quirrell.

  11. When Harry touched Professor Quirrell, Quirrell’s skin began to burn and blister. He could not bear Harry’s touch, and Harry’s hands caused him terrible pain. Quirrell was destroyed after Voldemort left his body.

  12. Voldemort could not kill Harry because Harry’s mother, Lily, chose to die to save him. Her willing sacrifice created powerful protective magic based on love. When Voldemort used the Killing Curse against Harry, the curse rebounded and destroyed Voldemort’s body instead. That protection also prevented Quirrell, who was carrying Voldemort, from touching Harry safely.

  13. Before Dumbledore gave extra points, Slytherin had 472 points and Gryffindor had only 312. Then Dumbledore awarded 50 points to Ron for the best game of chess Hogwarts had seen in many years, 50 points to Hermione for logic and bravery, 60 points to Harry for courage, and 10 points to Neville for standing up to his friends. Gryffindor finished with 482 points, one point more than Slytherin, and won the House Cup.
