1) How many lines does the London Underground have?
The London Underground has 11 lines: Bakerloo, Central, Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, Jubilee, Metropolitan, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Waterloo & City. Each line is shown in a different colour on the map.
2) On what bank of the River Thames are most of them situated?
Most of the Underground lines and stations are situated on the north bank of the River Thames. However, some lines also cross the river and serve the southern part of London.
3) Is there a circular line?
Yes, there is. It is called the Circle Line and is marked in yellow on the map. It connects many important stations in central London. Its central route forms a loop, although the complete modern line is not a closed circle.
4) What station names are associated with places in London that you have heard of?
I have heard of several famous places in London that are associated with Underground station names. For example, Westminster is near the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Tower Hill is near the Tower of London, and London Bridge is named after a famous bridge. Other well-known stations include Baker Street, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Hyde Park Corner and Trafalgar Square's nearby station, Charing Cross.
5) Can you say that London's Underground is very old just by looking at the map?
No, we cannot tell exactly how old the London Underground is just by looking at the map because it does not show when the lines were built. However, we know that the London Underground is the oldest underground railway system in the world. It was opened in 1863.
6) What additional information does the map give?
The map gives a lot of useful information. It shows the names and locations of Underground stations, the different lines and their colours, and the stations where passengers can change from one line to another. It also shows the River Thames, fare zones, connections with other railway services and airports. Some special symbols indicate stations with step-free access. The map helps passengers plan their journeys and find the best routes around London.
