Many creatures in Harry Potter are based on mythology, but J.K. Rowling often adds her own twists. For example, dragons in mythology are usually fire-breathing, greedy, and dangerous, just like in the books. However, in Harry Potter, dragons are also used in the Triwizard Tournament, which is not from myth. The phoenix is a mythical bird that bursts into flames and is reborn; in the books, Fawkes has healing tears and can carry heavy loads, which are Rowling's additions. Centaurs in Greek myths are often wild and aggressive, but in Harry Potter they are wise stargazers who avoid human affairs. So while the core traits remain, the books adapt them to fit the wizarding world.
