Are you fond of reading?
Yes, I am fond of reading. I think reading is both useful and enjoyable because books help me relax, improve my imagination, and learn many new things.

What books do you prefer to read?
I prefer fiction, adventure stories, detective novels, and fantasy books. I especially enjoy books with an exciting plot, interesting characters, and unexpected events.

What books do you read and study in your literature class?
In our literature classes, we read and study works by Ukrainian and foreign writers. We discuss poems, short stories, novels, and plays. We also analyse the characters, the main ideas, and the problems raised by the authors.

What books have you read in English?
I have read some adapted books in English, such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and several short stories by Oscar Wilde. Adapted versions are easier for learners because they contain simpler vocabulary.

Is it difficult for you to read books in English?
Sometimes it is difficult for me to read books in English because I do not know all the words and expressions. However, I usually try to understand unfamiliar words from the context or look them up in a dictionary. The more I read, the easier it becomes.

I have read works by Ukrainian classics such as Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky, and Ivan Nechui-Levytsky. Among foreign classics, I have read works by William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Jules Verne, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

I know such English writers as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle, Daniel Defoe, and J. K. Rowling. Among American writers, I know Mark Twain, Jack London, Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, O. Henry, and Ray Bradbury.

Is there a book that you’ve read several times?
Yes, I have read The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry several times. Although it seems to be a children’s story, it contains many important ideas about friendship, love, responsibility, loneliness, and human relationships.

Do people make you read books?
Sometimes teachers or parents ask me to read particular books. However, I do not think this is always a bad thing. Some books that seemed uninteresting at first later became meaningful and enjoyable to me.

Do you put aside a book that seems dull to you?
If a book seems dull, I usually try to read a few more chapters before putting it aside. Sometimes a story needs time to become interesting. However, if I still do not enjoy it, I may choose another book.

Do you always read a book to the end?
I try to read every book to the end, especially when it is part of my school programme. Nevertheless, I sometimes stop reading a book if it is extremely boring or too difficult for me.

Can you name a book which you read from the very beginning to the end without putting it down?
One such book was The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. The mysterious atmosphere and the investigation were so exciting that I wanted to discover the truth as soon as possible.

Who is your favourite writer?
My favourite writer is Arthur Conan Doyle. I like his detective stories because they are intelligent, mysterious, and full of unexpected details. Sherlock Holmes is one of the most memorable characters in world literature.

What do you like in your favourite book characters?
I like characters who are brave, honest, intelligent, kind, and loyal. I also admire characters who do not give up when they face difficulties and who are ready to help other people.

What can we learn from different kinds of books?
Different kinds of books can teach us different things. Historical books help us understand the past, detective stories develop logical thinking, fantasy books improve our imagination, and realistic novels teach us about people and society. Books can also teach us to distinguish between good and evil, understand other people’s feelings, make responsible decisions, and appreciate friendship, love, courage, and kindness.
